About the program

KHQ’s Legal Assistant Cadet Program is a 12-month opportunity designed to give you a genuine, hands-on introduction to life as a legal assistant within a high-performing law firm. Throughout the program, you’ll rotate through reception and multiple practice areas, gaining practical experience supporting lawyers, clients and business operations. Each cadet is paired with a dedicated mentor and buddy to provide guidance, support and encouragement from day one.

The program is designed to provide meaningful exposure across a range of legal support functions while helping you build the skills, knowledge and relationships needed for a successful career as a Legal Assistant.

Your 12-month journey

The program is structured into four sequential rotations, giving you hands-on exposure to reception and three different practice groups over the course of your first year. Rotation length may be adjusted slightly to suit business needs, and you may also be asked to support a different practice group temporarily if their permanent legal assistant is on leave.

What you’ll be doing

As a Legal Assistant Cadet, you’ll rotate through reception and multiple practice areas, gaining valuable experience across a variety of legal and administrative functions. Your responsibilities will grow as you build confidence and capability and may include:

Reception & communication

  • Answering and directing incoming telephone calls, and taking accurate messages
  • Greeting clients and visitors professionally when required
  • Communicating effectively with directors, lawyers, staff and clients across all levels of the firm

Document & file management

  • Opening new files via the firm’s document management system
  • Preparing documents, briefs to counsel, and court books
  • Printing, photocopying and scanning documents
  • Filing and archiving physical and electronic records
  • Court filing in accordance with relevant procedures and deadlines
  • Data entry and maintaining accurate records
  • Sending and managing correspondence via email

Practice & client support

  • Assisting directors, lawyers and administrative staff across different practice areas
  • Supporting time recording, monthly billing and debt collection processes
  • Assisting with ad hoc requests for practical support as they arise

Business operations & coordination

  • Managing diaries and calendars, coordinating appointments and deadlines
  • Coordinating meeting room bookings and catering requirements
  • Organising travel arrangements
  • Assisting with team, client and firm events
  • Arranging couriers and other logistical support

Throughout these rotations, you’ll gain a practical understanding of how a law firm operates while discovering where your strengths and interests lie.
